REVIEW: Workman melds rock and opera (possible SPOILERS for The God That Comes)

Rating: Rating 4 (out of five)
The appending of a “work in progress” proviso to the title of a play is a dreadful sign. It normally signifies that a show’s producers are working from a yet to be finalized script, or are trying to iron out kinks in the production cues.

On the Town with Alan Doyle
It’s happy hour for Alan Doyle. Not only will his band, Great Big Sea, hit the 20-year milestone in 2013, but the affable Newfoundlander is “venturing into the unknown” with his first solo album, Boy on Bridge, which features appearances from artists such as Colin James, Jim Cuddy, Hawksley Workman and actor/singer Russell Crowe.
“I’ve just been lucky to know these people because of the circle of friends I run in,” says Doyle, seated at the Queen and Beaver Public House over a pint of Russian Imperial stout. “I mean, I’d be just as happy to build a deck with them.”
While the hardest experience was “keeping up with Hawksley Workman — he’s so intense,” Doyle says, one of his favourite memories was from Bryan Adam’s The Warehouse studios in Vancouver.

The God That Comes
Music and performance by Hawksley Workman. Created by Hawksley Workman and Christian Barry. In association with 2b theatre company.
March 19 - April 7, 2013 EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts. Calgary, Alberta, Canada
“An electrifying evening of music and theatre starring Juno-winning rocker Hawksley Workman.”
In a world governed by greed, rules and order, the people take to the hills in a hedonistic revolt fuelled by wine, ritual madness and ecstasy, in this contemporary take on the Greek tragedy, The Bacchae. This live performance stars Hawksley Workman and fuses the chaotic revelry of a rock concert with the captivating intimacy of theatre. Have a drink, hear a story, and get lost in the music.
“To this day, I’m eternally grateful for your support and encouragement and for being an eccentric who fit into the world in your own way, and who showed a way for me to exist in my own way on my own terms. Thank you.”
